With this series, we would like to develop a critical thinking about artists’ books and will look into the medium historically through the practices of different artists working with the printed matter.

The first guest speaker will be Antoni Muntadas.

Muntadas’ work addresses social, political and communications issues, the relationship between public and private space within social frameworks, and investigations of channels of information and the ways they may be used to censor central information or promulgate ideas. He works in different media such as photography, video, publications, internet and multi-media installations.

Antoni Muntadas is an artist who has been living and working in New York since 1971. He witnessed and partook in the New York 70’s art scene and the development of artist’s books and publications.

For his talk at BAS, Muntadas will make a personal selection of artists’ books. He will look into how the book and publication format, a medium that is intensely used by artists and is in constant revision, is part of the development of new ideas and formats and representative of an active production. He will talk about a number of books by different authors since the 70's which he thinks are relevant and significant products, and about artist books initiatives like Art Metropole in Toronto, Printed Matter in New York and Other Books and So in Amsterdam.

The talk will take place at BAS, on January 13th 2010, the last day of Sol LeWitt’s show.

The talk will be in English; the space where the talk will be held is small.

Antoni Muntadas, born in Barcelona, Spain in 1942 is currently a Visiting Professor with the MIT Visual Arts Program. His works have been exhibited throughout the world, including the Venice Biennale, Documenta Vl and X in Kassel, the Sao Paulo Biennal, la Biennale de Lyon, the Whitney and La Havana. Muntadas has received several prizes and grants including those of the Guggenheim Foundation, the Rockefeller foundation and in 1995 he was awarded an Ars Electronica Honorary Mention for his well-known work "The File Room". This is an early and ongoing internet art project, started in 1994, consisting of an open database of cases of censorship.

Antoni Muntadas is one of the guest artists of Lives and Works in Istanbul, a project initiated by Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture.

BAS is an artist run space in Istanbul initiated by Banu Cennetoğlu where artists’ books and publications are collected, displayed and produced.

BAS is supported by The Marmara Hotels and Residences, BEK, Ofset Yapımevi and İstanbul Sanat Araştırmaları Derneği.

info@b-a-s.info
www.b-a-s.info

Exhibition of Artist's Books by Sol Lewitt

Exhibition of ARTIST’S BOOKS by Sol LeWitt
15.12.2009 - 12.01.2010
Tuesday - Wednesday
2pm - 6 pm
Opening Tuesday 15.12.2009, 6.30 pm

and

A TALK by Antoni Muntadas
Tuesday 13.01.2010, 6.00 pm

BAS
Nuri Ziya Sokak No 7 Beyoğlu Istanbul TR
info@b-a-s.info
http://www.b-a-s.info/ http://basbent.blogspot.com/

Exhibition of artist’s books by Sol LeWitt and a talk by Antoni Muntadas
As Bas, we are working on a contemporary and local artist’s book production and its international distribution. We also have a growing collection of existing artist’s books which we make available to the public. In addition to this, we are starting a new series of projects. The first event will be an exhibition of artist’s books by Sol Lewitt. It will be accompanied by the first of a series of talks where artists can select, talk about, describe or analyze artists’ books. The first guest speaker will be Antoni Muntadas.

The practice of making artist’s books goes back to the 19th century. It reached its peak during the 60’s, the period of conceptual art. Artists of that time believed in the idea that books could be a cheap and democratic way to disseminate works beyond political borders.

Sol LeWitt was one of the most important artists of conceptual art and minimalism. He used books as a vehicle for his ideas and as an alternative space in which to exhibit his work to a wider audience. The books frame the artist’s systematic rationalism and its extreme consequences, as well as addressing the broader issues crucial to the evolution of the artist’s book since the mid-1960s.

Sol Lewitt produced 75 books between 1967 and 2002. On December 15th, BAS will open its new location by hosting a critical selection of 48 books from this exceptional collection. Curated by Giorgio Maffei and Emanuele De Donno, this project by VIAINDUSTRIAE is a unique compilation. It was first exhibited in April 2009 at Spoleto where LeWitt lived for 30 years.

With his close friend Lucy Lippard (activist, writer and art historian) Sol LeWitt and 8 other friends founded Printed Matter in New York in 1976, which is today’s most important non-profit organization for artist’s books and publications.

In this context, we have invited Antoni Muntadas to give a talk at BAS. Muntadas is an artist who has been living in New York since 1971. He witnessed and shared with LeWitt and Lippard the New York 70’s scene and the development of Printed Matter. Working with multi media as well as printed matter, a great part of his practice explores archive, recording and manipulation of information through social and political issues.

Muntadas will make a personal selection of artists’ books. He will look into how the book and publication format, a medium that is intensely used by artists and is in constant revision, is part of the development of new ideas and formats and representative of an active production. He will talk about some books he thinks are relevant and significant products by different authors since the 70's, and about some of the artist books initiatives in the 70’s like Printed Matter in NY and Other Books and So in Amsterdam.
The talk will take place at BAS, on January 13th 2010, the last day of LeWitt’s show.

The talk will be in English, the space where the talk will be held is small.

Supportive Links

Sol LeWitt:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sol_LeWitt/
http://nga.gov.au/internationalprints/Tyler/Default.cfm?MnuID=6&Essay=artonview30.1

http://www.hz-journal.org/n9/quaranta.html/
Antoni Muntadas:

http://www.thefileroom.org/

http://adaweb.walkerart.org/influx/muntadas/

VIAINDUSTRIAE:

ARTIST’S BOOKS by Sol LeWitt is a project by VIAINDUSTRIAE curated by Giorgio Maffei and Emanuele De Donno. The exhibition is an original event of great scientific significance, which aims to commemorate Sol LeWitt two years after his death, focusing on his entire artist’s book production. The exhibition displays for the first time ever and systematically all his 75 Artist’s Books, produced in his artistic life. After Spoleto, Bologna and Istanbul, the exhibition will go to Paris, London and Ljubljiana.
http://www.viaindustriae.it/

Printed Matter:

http://printedmatter.org/

Lucy Lippard

http://printedmatter.org/researchroom/essays/ault.cfm?CFID=2383102&CFTOKEN=59064071

BAS

http://www.b-a-s.info/

BAS is supported by The Marmara Hotels and Residences, BEK, Ofset Yapımevi and İstanbul Sanat Araştırmaları Derneği.

Bas/Bent in Paris 4-6 December

CANCELED
*ArtistBookInternational was canceled due to a strike of the Centre Pompidou staff. In the last years artistic publishing has developed into a form of individual practise. The festival will provide an overview on this aspect of artistic production and present a selection of the most active figures in this field. The focus will be on publications which are works in their own rather than books about art. In addition the festival will be complemented by a number of evening lectures and talks.
The festival is a joint initiative with argobooks (Vanessa Adler) and Greatest Hits (Michalis Pichler) and takes place in conjunction with two further independent book events at the same weekend: Kiosk / Modes of Multiplication at the Kunstbibliothek Berlin and the Zine Sezession at Motto, Berlin-Kreuzberg.

28th Biennal of Grafic Art, Ljubjana

BAS/ Bent at Galerija Skuc, Ljubljana

4.9-25.10 2009

BAS/ Bent will participate in the exhibition: The Matrix: An Unstable Reality in Galerija Škuc, and the Artist's Book Salon.
Both are part of the 28th Biennial of Graphic Arts, Ljubjana, Slovenia

All the books from the Bent series will be in the exhibition and an added intervention by the artists will accompany the books.

Bent 005: KILAVUZ by Atılkunst
Bent 004: SSS by Cevdet Erek
Bent 003: Emre Hüner
Bent 002: TakipPoursuite
Bent 001: Kaldırım Destanı by Masist Gül

The 28th Biennial of Graphic Arts is a multifaceted event with a long tradition; it consists of a number of exhibitions as well as other happenings. Once again, the Biennial’s central exhibition, The Matrix: An Unstable Reality, on view for two months in Ljubljana galleries, will focus on contemporary graphic art in the broadest sense of the term. At the invitation of the International Centre of Graphic Arts, which proposed the theme of the main show, this idea was further developed and shaped by Galerija Alkatraz, Galerija Ganes Pratt, Galerija Jakopič, Galerija Kapsula, and Galerija Škuc, which are also serving as venues for the Biennial.
Alongside the central exhibition, the 28th Biennial of Graphic Arts includes as well the Artist’s Book Salon, the traditional exhibition for the winner of the Grand Prize from the previous Biennial, and a number of accompanying exhibitions.

The Matrix: An Unstable Reality
The exhibition responds to certain vital questions for society and art raised by the cult movie trilogy The Matrix. Does a medium stay the same once it incorporates new technologies in its discourse? Does this increase the audience for art? What is the social power of those who possess the matrix? Is the possession of the matrix enough to also justify exclusive reproduction rights? Can we create a perfect world, whether real or virtual? The exhibition offers a selection of more than eighty internationally established and emerging artists. Their work extends from traditional and contemporary printmaking to artist’s books and interventions in the public space, in the mass media, and on computers.
art director: Božidar Zrinski
curators: Gülsen Bal (curated project within exhibition in Škuc Gallery), Alenka Gregorič, Petja Grafenauer, Jadranka Ljubičič and Tadej Pogačar
venues: International Centre of Graphic Arts, Gallery Alkatraz, Gallery Ganes Pratt, Gallery Jakopič – MGML, Gallery Kapsula, Gallery Škuc

Artist’s Book Salon
Artist’s books are an increasingly visible form of expression in the art world both in Slovenia and elsewhere. The Biennial of Graphic Arts will spotlight this medium with a special event: the Artist’s Book Salon, at which we will present an international selection of artist’s books produced by independent publishers and individual contemporary artists. The event will include a series of talks and a book fair, at which publishers will be selling their wares. The Salon will be a space for socializing and for exchanging ideas and views about the making of artist’s books.
5–6 September, International Centre of Graphic Arts
co-ordinator: Breda Škrjanec

After Gogo: A New Era of Korean Art
Based on a proposal by Jeon Joonho, the winner of the Grand Prize of the 2007 Biennial, the exhibition presents the “post-gogo” generation of South Korean artists. Their work re-examines various issues in contemporary Korean society – a society divided between North and South in which the Cold War is still very much alive. These artists were born in the 1960s, when their parents were working hard to rebuild the country after the Korean War. They grew up in the 1970s, when American soldiers brought “gogo” music to Korea and the country was inundated with mass dance parties in “gogo clubs” (also known as “chicken coops”) and gogo became a synonym for the pleasure culture of the younger generation. They began making art in the 1980s.
